It is a condition where the thyroid gland grows larger or the visible changes with the swallow neck. This condition happens due to the irregular release of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 it could be any condition hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.

TYPES OF GOITER

There are three main types.

  • Simple (diffuse) goiter: When the entire thyroid gland swells and is smooth at the touch.
  • Nodular goiter: When a solid or fluid-filled lump called a nodule develops within the thyroid which makes it lumpy.
  • Multinodular goiter: When there are many lumps within the thyroid.

Goiter has been classified into two different sections.

  • Toxic goiter: It is the situation when the thyroid gland is enlarged and produces too much thyroid hormone.
  • Nontoxic goiter: In this situation, the thyroid gland swallows but at normal thyroid levels it is a nontoxic goiter.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY GOITER

Anyone can have goiter it is a condition that arises due to iodine deficiency, thyroid inflammation, or abnormal hormone production. Most commonly this condition is found in females, especially in the age of 40 and above.

CAUSES

In general, this condition happens due to the irregular release of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Several conditions can cause goiter such as.

  • IODINE DEFICIENCY -When there is a lack of iodine in the body which is responsible for producing thyroid hormones, prompting the gland to enlarge in an attempt to compensate.
  • GRAVE’S DISEASE – Graves’ disease is an Auto-immune system disorder that results in the excessive production of thyroid hormones. Overproduction of hormones causes HYPERTHYROIDISM and the weakening of muscles and bones.
  • HASHIMOTO DISEASE – Hashimoto is an autoimmune disease that can lead to lower normal levels of thyroid hormone in the body (hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid ). It is one of the most common diseases that can affect various areas of the body resulting in weight gain, constipation and fatigue. On average 5o% population of the U.S is affected by Hashimoto’s disease.
